God’s Investment in Our Bodies

[This post is part of a series covering eight little known theological truths about the Christian’s body]

Yesterday and the day before we looked at two little known theological truths about the Christian’s body. Here is the third truth:

Everything God does is for the ultimate good of your body

If you are a body/soul unity, then Romans 8:28 is referring to your bodily good as well as your spiritual good.

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good.”

Everything that has ever happened and will ever happen is for the good of your body not just your soul. “You” refers not to the immaterial combination of your personality, emotions, dreams, thoughts, memories but to the whole of who you are, body and soul. Material and immaterial.

Don’t believe me? Look at the immediate context:

“For we know that the whole creation thas been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies” (Romans 8:22-23).

All creation and all humanity has been waiting for what? The redemption of our bodies. God is incredibly interested in your body having each and every one of its desires met. In Him. In His time. But it is a 100% guaranteed promise to those who love Him and are called for his purpose.

God not only designed your body with its desires, but is also doing everything he can to make sure it is satisfied eternally in Him.

This means heaven is not just for the soul, but for the body as well. He is creating a new heaven and new earth. An earth where our body can run without growing weary, embrace without a single impure thought, eat and drink without feeling bloated or getting fat or chronically hungry.

But the greatest thing about our new bodies and new earth is that we will finally be able to see clearly how every little detail of God’s creation shows us more and more of who he is. Every physical joy in heaven will be because it is an encounter with the Living God. Every emotional joy in heaven will be because all relationships, beauty, art, and stories will reveal more to us of who he is. Eternal life is a never ending adventure in the discovery of God’s eternal pleasures.

This heaven is for the body! All of those desires that have been running amuck will finally be trained to enjoy the Fountain of Living Water.

This is the inheritance we are destined to. This is our reward given to us for Christ’s good work on our behalf.

Monday we will look at the fourth truth: Your body is not the enemy.
